Woo Hoo!

pom_poms_1.jpg

I’m down another half pound today.  I’m feeling really great about the decisions I’m making and the way I’m being rewarded for it.  It was such a great feeling this morning to fit into some pants that I wasn’t able to fit into 2 weeks ago.  Woo Hoo!

Planning Ahead

calendar_1.jpg

I’m still hurting from class yesterday; hopefully Yoga will help stretch me out today.  I’m getting into Yoga more; focusing on myself instead of caring about what others might be thinking of me.  I’m breathing deeper and am able to do more poses without falling.
The kids had a birthday party at a park today with cupcakes. I packed myself some healthy snacks, so I wouldn’t be starving and give in to cake. Planning ahead like this is one of my tried and true strategies.  If I were starving at the park, I’d convince myself that I needed a cupcake.  Every morning, I look at my calendar to see what events I have that day.  Do I need to make something for a picnic? Do I have a birthday party to take the kids to?  Will I be out of the house all morning?  Planning ahead like this helps me realize if I need to take snacks with me.  I always carry a little baggie of almonds with me, but sometimes that is not filling enough.  Today, I had the time to pack a Fruit and Yogurt Parfait, Hummus and carrots in a lunchbox for myself. What are your favorite to-go snacks?

Ouch!

Barbed_wire_1.jpg

I’m still weighing the same.  I wonder if this is a plateau, or if I’ll still see weight loss this week, just not as quickly as last week. I am not discouraged.  As I said last week, I usually lose 4 pounds or more the first week. I have picked up my workouts a bit this week, and today, I ate 1/2 my portion of my usual snack, but I did have a rather large lunch.  I tried a new class at the gym today.  Body Pump. You lift weights to music for an hour. I loved it because I wasn’t thinking about the time. Man, I am sore! It hurts to walk down my staircase!  This is good sore, though, if there is such a thing.  It’s my proof that I worked my body, and I know I’m getting stronger.

Stumped on Salads

salad_1.jpg

I have a hard time creating new salads.  I love ordering salads because I don’t have to think about what ingredients go together and what dressing to use.  I never remember what ingredients go in them by the time I get home, though, and my biggest challenge are dressings. My lunch today was fairly easy to come up with. I used my leftover tuna steak, shredded it and put it on lettuce.  My dressing was a mock tartar sauce.  Do you have any easy favorite salads to share?  I’d love to try them.  Please post your recipe below.

Seize the Day

beautiful_day_1.jpg

Wow!  What a gorgeous day outside today!  I sold my double stroller because my toddlers weigh too much and it was really hard to turn, so I don’t get to go on walks with them unless I go at their pace.  Anyway, today was the first day of preschool for both of them. After breakfast, I ran my errands and estimated I had enough time to walk/jog to the school as long as my friend could take us home.  She did, and I got an unexpected 20 min workout today!  My grandmother’s advice, passed to me by my mom: Don’t wait for tomorrow to do what you can today.  What unexpected thing have you done lately?

Stepping it up

step_1.jpg

I weighed in at 141 today.  3 pounds in one week isn’t bad! The first week of any diet, I tend to lose this much or more, as most of it is water weight. I took a step class today.  It kicked my butt!  I haven’t taken a step class in a long time, I wore sweat pants, and I had a double step. I was dripping and I’m not a sweater. I got to class early and did sit ups and ‘sat on the wall’ for one minute.  She did a lot of leg work, so I’m happy with today’s workout.  I’m so pumped about what I’m doing here, how much sense this diet makes, and the way I feel, that I want to step it up this week.  I want to work out more this week.  I can’t believe I am saying this.  Me, who hates to work out.  Me, who would rather sleep instead of do much of anything else.  Me. A future fitness buff?

A Day of Rest

lions_1.jpg

Today is Sunday. I don’t work out on Sunday. I think you need at least one day of rest from fitness.  I do plan on staying on my diet, though.  I know there are some people that ‘take the weekend off.’  I don’t think the weekend should be a free-for-all.  Why would you want all your hard work the rest of the week to be lost on two days?  Anyway, I try to maintain that Sunday is family day in our house.  We try to spend the day together and fit in at least one family activity in the middle of all the household chores we have to catch up with.  Today our family activity was going to the mall to get the kids some Fall clothes, and then out to dinner.  I am motivated.  I have no desire to cheat tonight.

Our Semester Begins

bus_1.jpg

Down another pound this morning! (141.5)  Tuesdays and Thursdays will be my busiest days of the week.  I say, “will be” because today is the start of our school semester.  My son starts pre-school, Sports Essentials, and home schooling one day a week. My daughter and I have mommy and me gymnastics at The Little Gym and she goes to a Mom’s day out program once a week.  Since I know I’ll be out all morning, I’ll take a banana with me as my snack before errands. I’ll come home to make my chicken salad for lunch, then I’ll have to go pick him up. Here’s a tip: I’ve noticed that if I take the steps to prepare a meal well before the meal-time arrives, I’m more likely to eat what I have planned. Too often, I have told myself, “I’m hungry. I was planning on this certain healthy meal, but nachos would be so easy to make” BOO! Well, my tongue says “yum,”  my mind says, “you go, you rebel”, but my stomach says, “keep this up and I’m not going to let you button your favorite jeans!”

I Need Coffee

coffee_cup_1_1.jpg

I slept like crap last night. I was tired and wired at the same time. I’ve never experienced anything like this. It felt like my heart was jumping with excitement, (probably about this diet…no seriously!) but my eyes were so tired. I left my marriage bed at 11 to come sleep on the couch (my legs were ‘jumpy’ – I sometimes have restless leg syndrome) Anyway, sleeping on the couch was hardly sleep. I remember looking at the clock every hour until about 2:30am. Then my lovely son woke me up at 6am. I NEED COFFEE.  I am determined to get my workout in today, though. I may just find myself walking and reading my book instead of my planned elliptical sprint. I weighed in at 142.5 this morning. I’m excited! I don’t feel thinner, but I’ll take it.

Here We Go!

lightbulb_1.jpg

The Rule of 3 Diet was developed in my mind last night, and born today. Today, I started the diet. I weigh every morning. Generally I weigh naked, but it really doesn’t matter as long as you are consistent. I think weighing every day is important because it will let you know what a certain day’s worth of eating will do to your body. For example, if you eat a lot of sodium, you may gain a pound or two. Granted, it is probably water weight that you’ll have off by the next day, but you won’t know if you don’t weigh yourself again. Something else to consider though: if you have a significant amount to lose (30 pounds or more), weighing every day might be really frustrating. For you, I recommend weighing in once a week.

So, today, I weigh 144. My goal is to lead a healthy lifestyle, with the unofficial goal of weighing somewhere around 130 and a size 4-6, depending on my level of fitness. I know I can achieve this because I have been at this weight not too long ago. I was the thinnest I’ve ever been right after I had my son. I went on Weight Watchers and got down to 127 and a size 0-4, depending on where I bought my clothes. It was great! I had to go buy all new clothes because I shrunk out of all my old ones! Now I wish I would’ve kept my old clothes because I’m growing out of them. I’m a size 8 now. I am uncomfortable and my clothes don’t fit. Until today, I have had no motivation to diet or go to the gym. I joined a gym in January and was going 5-6 times a week. I burnt out. I thought 3 would be a reasonable number of times to ask myself to go. I’m planning on going tomorrow. I’m even wearing my gym shirt to bed so I don’t conveniently ‘forget.’ Because I know working out is so important, I built in the reward system of earning more cheats when you go above 3.

So my journey begins. I thought I’d write my food down every day, so you will have a guide should you need one. And hey, you could even copy my meals and not have to think about it at all. Most of the measurements are approximate. I have dieted so much that I know what they look like. If you are just starting out, measure until you get the hang of it.

What are your goals? Can you remember the time when you felt your best?  Tell me about them by posting below.
